FAQs for Undergraduate Main Campus Students

Academics

We offer more than 40 different degree programs in a wide variety of areas at the undergraduate level. You also can choose from a wide array of undergraduate minors, and take advantage of the many internships and other hands-on learning experiences available at GMercyU.

Want to know more? Our Programs page includes a list of all programs.

Nope. In fact, 18% of our incoming students do not declare a major right away. To help you discover the path that’s right for you, we’ve created a University Studies program that includes special advising and other services to support you as you determine which direction you want to go.

Great question! Lots of smaller, liberal arts colleges and universities talk about the level of personal attention you’ll receive and how you’ll benefit from taking liberal arts courses. But at GMercyU, you’re going to find professors who not only know your name but genuinely care about your success – inside and outside the classroom. They will help you network with people in your field, develop real-world experience in your discipline, and build your resume before you graduate. Equally important, they will help you develop a variety of skills you need to succeed in your career and in your life.

Yes, it’s essential to develop practical knowledge and skills in your field, but it’s also important to develop the transferrable skills that all employers demand – skills like communication, collaboration, ethical decision-making, and problem-solving. We’ll help you develop the whole package at GMercyU, beginning with a program that we call the Griffin Edge.

The Griffin Edge includes an e-portfolio where you will document your GMercyU educational experiences, thoughtfully reflect on those experiences, and receive feedback from faculty. It's designed to help you take ownership of your educational journey and chart the right path for you. It will also help you learn how to talk about your college experiences in meaningful ways — and that can make all the difference in a job interview.

For example, a student might say in a job interview: "I conducted research at the undergraduate level."

A Griffin Edge student might say: "The opportunity to conduct my own research alongside expert faculty taught me the importance of being exact in my data collection and analysis. I was even able to present my findings at our annual research conference! I know this is the career for me."

Finally, let's not forget the importance of developing your leadership skills. In addition to taking on leadership roles in our many clubs and organizations, you have the opportunity to participate in the Griffin Student Leadership Institute (GSLI). The GSLI program will help you develop and refine your leadership capabilities, and even connect with internal and external mentors.

Absolutely! Hands-on learning plays an integral role in the GMercyU experience. Internships, clinicals, student teaching and other opportunities to gain real-world experience are highly encouraged and often required as part of your degree program. In some programs, you’ll begin to gain hands-on experience as early as your first year on campus!

If research is your thing, you may even get to present your research findings at a regional or national professional conference.

Our Alternative Spring Break service experiences provide yet another way for you to use your skills to make a real difference in the lives of others, while also expanding your world view and building your resume. It’s definitely worth doing.

Opportunities to learn outside the classroom are only limited by your own imagination and determination!

You bet! It’s a wonderful way to expand your horizons, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Currently, you can choose from among 26 different countries for a study abroad experience. In addition to full-semester study abroad programs, we also have students going abroad during Alternative Spring Break service experiences and shorter edu-tourism trips throughout the year.

Learn more on our Study Abroad page.

Ah, that’s one of the best parts of choosing GMercyU! Our classes are small, so you have plenty of opportunities to really get to know your professors and fellow classmates.

Our student-to-faculty ratio is 10:1. That means, most of your classes will have fewer than 20 students, and you won’t ever find yourself in a class with hundreds of other students, a fairly common experience at much larger schools.

We have a rolling admissions policy, which means you will receive an admissions decision within a couple of weeks after submitting a completed application. For more details on what you need to provide, go to our Application Requirements page.

Campus Life

There's a lot to do in the summer before your first year of college. Aside from the packing, form completion and purchasing of Twin XL sheets, you'll want to spend time with your friends and family and learn how to do things you may have never done, like laundry!

In order to receive a GMercyU email address, you'll need to register for at least one class. Your GMercyU email is the primary way the University will communicate with you, so make sure you enroll in classes as soon as possible, so you can get your official GMercyU email address before your first class begins.

In a word: Fantastic! Our students hail from cities and towns that range from 15 minutes to 7,000 miles away. Some play sports, while others focus on building their skills by participating in the business, psychology or Best Buddies clubs. Many students participate in more than one club or organization, and even more than that take advantage of the extensive number of campus activities and events held throughout the year. And then there’s service. Service is a big part of the GMercyU experience, and students and staff alike give of their time and expertise to those who need it most.

You can learn more about our students by checking out our Griffin Success Stories!

Aside from what our students DO, it’s important to consider who they ARE. They are people who care about making a difference – in their lives and in the lives of others. But, don’t take our word for it.

Schedule a campus visit and see for yourself!

As a University whose Core Values include Service to Society, Integrity in Word and Deed, Respect for the Dignity of Each Person, and Social Justice in a Diverse World, the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have always been a part of our mission.

Today, we are more committed than ever to advancing DEI in our culture, curriculum, and community.

See our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion page for related services, initiatives, and policies, and explore our DEI Strategic Plan to learn about our four goals for creating a more equitable, inclusive campus culture — and our means for holding ourselves accountable to those goals.

We think you will LOVE living on campus. In addition to being able to roll out of bed and get to class within minutes, you also will be able to spend more time with your friends – hanging out, participating in campus activities, and of course, studying.

Did you know that studies show that students who live on campus often maintain higher GPAs and are more likely to graduate within four years? Living on campus also provides more opportunities to take an active role in student life, including joining our Residence Life team!

Our motto: Live Here. Play Here. Succeed Here.

There are four residence halls on campus, and all are within a short walk of classroom, dining, and athletic facilities. Regardless of which one you live in, you will have amenities such as Wi-Fi access, cable, community kitchens and lounge areas, and brand new washers and dryers that can be used at no cost.

Want to know more? Take a closer look at our Residence Halls page, where you can learn about the renovations currently happening in our residence hall for first-year students!

Ah, now that really is a frequently asked question! Our roommate matching process is part art and part science. When you fill out your housing application, you will be asked to answer a series of questions about your living preferences, including whether you are a morning person or a night person, and whether you prefer a quiet room or don’t mind a little noise. Once we receive all the housing applications, our trained residence life staff begins the process of making matches based on your preferences.

If you already have a roommate in mind, there’s a place for you to include that person’s name on the form. And don’t worry! Most roommate matches turn out just fine, but if you are not happy, your resident assistant will be there to help.

Delicious, plentiful, and varied. Whether you’re eating in our all-you-care-to-eat dining hall, enjoying a wood-fired pizza from The Pep (Pepperazzi), or placing a mobile order to go, you’re sure to find something that’s not only delicious but nutritious. Plus, our convenient new Market in University Hall just opened in January 2023. If you live on campus, you can even cook something up in the kitchen that’s located in each of the residence halls.

When you want a change of scene, dozens of local restaurants are within minutes of campus, and the incredible Philadelphia food scene is just 30 minutes away.

To learn more about dining options, visit our Dining Services page.

Gwynedd Mercy University has a beautiful 145-acre campus that’s home to about 1,500 undergraduate students.

Want to take a closer look? Schedule a campus visit or take a virtual tour now!

Of course! All you will need is a parking permit, which costs $85 for resident students and $55 for commuters.

Mmmm, where to begin… There are so many choices, it’s hard to know where to start. In addition to dozens of organized clubs and many, many planned activities, there are plenty of open spaces where you can hang out with friends, play a pickup game of basketball, or take a nap under a beautiful tree.

If exercise is your thing, you can use the cardio equipment, lift weights, and play basketball and racquetball in the Griffin Complex, or take a long run around the tree-lined campus. Tennis courts? Yup, we’ve got those too. Intramural sports? You bet! Our intramural champions have the opportunity to play the winning intramural team from another college.

And the sights and sounds of one of the greatest cities in the world are just 30 minutes away! Once in Philly, you can see a concert, take in a ball game, explore a museum, go shopping, and sample some of the best food in the Northeast.

Making sure the campus is safe and secure is one of our top priorities. Our Office of Public Safety is located in St. Brigid Hall and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Public Safety officers patrol the campus throughout the day and night, and we have a close relationship with the local police department. In fact, the current Chief of Police at the Lower Gwynedd Police Department is a GMercyU grad!

We have multiple emergency call stations throughout campus, will provide an escort across campus to anyone who wants it, and have an emergency messaging system in place to alert students, faculty and staff of weather-related closing and other emergency-related situations on campus via voicemail, email and text message.

Entry to the residence halls is granted only via an ID swipe card. We also encourage all students, faculty, and staff to contact our Office of Public Safety if they see or hear something that may require attention.

Students, faculty, and staff are also alerted to campus closings and emergency situations via our emergency alert system, Omnilert, which sends time-sensitive messaging to mobile phones and email addresses. Make sure your cell phone number is up to date in the system, so you'll get emergency messages as quickly as possible.

No, you're not required. GMercyU welcomes students of all beliefs, so while you're free to join our weekly Mass services whenever you'd like, we also recognize that Catholic services (or any prayer services) might not be your thing. That’s why our Mercy Center for Service, Spirituality, & Justice offers alternative activities for you to pause and breathe through a guided meditation or other style of reflective time. Use them when and if you need them!

As a whole, The Mercy Center offers a meaningful sense of community and support to all students, whether you're connected to a specific religion or not. If you enjoy giving back, service is a big part of what they do. Learn more here.

Yes! In 2017, GMercyU joined nearly 1,800 other college and university campuses across the country in going completely tobacco and smoke-free. The policy prohibits the use of all tobacco and smoke-inducing products in all GMercyU campus locations, including parking areas. The decision to go smoke-free was based on requests from our Student Government Association and is part of our Healthy Campus Initiative, which focuses on providing a healthy and safe campus environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

The online format gives you the freedom to complete your coursework at a time and place that’s convenient for you, while the on-ground format offers regular face-to-face interaction with faculty and students.

Course and program length vary depending on the type of degree and the number of credits required to earn that degree. Our undergraduate accelerated courses are five weeks in length while our graduate accelerated courses are seven weeks in length. Students take one course at a time.

To find out the length of your program, visit the Programs page and choose the program that interests you.

As an online student, you will have access to all of the same resources as our on-ground students. Students have access to Keiss Library, the Career Development Center, and our Student Success Center.
